Tax Assistance Resources

On January 27, 2025, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) launched the 2025 tax filing season, with a deadline for individuals to file their federal income taxes by Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

Resources are available for taxpayers who have questions or need assistance with their taxes.

It is recommended that you file electronically with direct deposit information to avoid delays.  For additional information about what to consider when filing federal income taxes for 2024, please visit this LINK.  

IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)/Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Programs: The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs provide free taxpayer assistance for certain individuals preparing their returns.

The VITA program has operated for more than 50 years. Through the program, VITA sites provide free taxpayer assistance for those making less than $67,000/year, those with disabilities, and those with limited English proficiency.

Similarly, the TCE program provides free taxpayer assistance. In general, TCE sites provide taxpayer assistance for those 60 years and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement issues.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program: Please keep in mind that most TCE sites are operated by AARP's Foundations' Tax Aide program. The nearest AARP TCE Tax-Aid site by calling 888-227-7669. Otherwise, click here.

"Where's My Refund"?: The IRS's "Where's My Refund?" tool allows taxpayers to check the status of their tax refund online. To check the status of your refund, click here.

"Where's My Amended Return"?: The IRS's "Where's My Amendment Return?" tool allows taxpayers to check the status of their amended return online — including for the tax year and up to three previous years. To check the status of your return, click here.

Local Taxpayer Advocate: The IRS's Taxpayer Advocate Services is an independent organization within the agency that represents taxpayers. Locally, the Hawaii Taxpayer Advocate provides free taxpayer assistance. You can contact them by calling 808-466-6375. Otherwise, click here.

IRS Free File: The IRS's Free File program allows taxpayers making less than $73,000/year to file their taxes online using commercial software — at no charge. To learn more about the program, click here

In addition to the above resources, IRS also works with nonprofit organizations to provide free taxpayer assistance for those who need help with preparing their federal and state income taxes.
