Senator Hirono Announces Funding to Defend Against Complex Coordinated Terrorist Attacks on Hawaii

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii) announced today that Hawaii will receive $492,800 in federal funding to enhance state preparedness and response efforts to address complex coordinated terrorist attacks.

“We must remain vigilant to threats from terrorism including homegrown extremism and lone wolf style attacks, but many of the programs that help keep us safe are under attack from the Trump administration,” said Senator Hirono. “This federal grant funding will help ensure that Hawaii has the appropriate resources to prepare for, prevent, and respond to these ever evolving threats. I will continue to fight against the Trump administration’s attempts to defund programs that keep Hawaii communities safe.”

Part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Fiscal Year 2016 Program to Prepare Communities for Complex Coordinated Terrorist Attacks (CCTA Program), the funding will provide the Hawaii Department of Defense resources to further develop planning and coordination activities.

According a report released by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, the Trump Administration’s budget proposal would slash counterterrorism programs by $583 million and eliminate grant programs like the CCTA Program, Countering Violent Extremism Grant Program, and the Law Enforcement Officer Reimbursement program.
