WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Mazie K. Hirono announced the nomination of 32 Hawaii students to U.S. military service academies for the Class of 2024. The academies are now considering the students’ applications for final selections.
“I am proud to nominate these young people who have demonstrated their academic excellence and dedication to serving our nation in uniform,” Senator Hirono said. “After years of conscientious study, community engagement, and commitment to physical fitness and outstanding personal character, I know that each of these candidates will be stellar representatives of and for Hawaii.”
Today’s announcement includes Senator Hirono’s nominations for the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy uses a separate nomination process.
Following their nomination by a member of the Senate or House of Representatives, each academy’s director of admissions selects from the submitted lists of nominees. Prospective students are measured on their scholastic achievement, leadership experience, school involvement, athletic and extra-curricular activities, community contributions, and volunteer or employment experiences. Nomination does not guarantee appointment.
