Senate Passes Hirono, Hanabusa Bill to Honor World War II Veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Senate unanimously passed the Admiral Lloyd R. “Joe” Vasey Pacific War Commemorative Display Establishment Act – a bill sponsored by Senator Mazie K. Hirono and Representative Colleen Hanabusa to establish a memorial at Pearl Harbor honoring the service of World War II veterans who served in the Pacific Theater. 

“Admiral Joe Vasey dedicated his life to serving our country and worked tirelessly to establish a memorial to pay tribute to his fellow veterans of the Pacific Theater during World War II,” Senator Hirono said. “Admiral Vasey passed away only a short time before we were able to pass this legislation, but the bill that bears his name is a fitting tribute to his life of service and the sacrifice so many Americans made to win the war in the Pacific.” 

The Admiral Lloyd R. “Joe” Vasey Pacific War Commemorative Display Establishment Act directs the National Park Service and the non-profit Pacific Historic Parks to create the memorial. The memorial was proposed by Admiral Vasey, a World War II veteran who served in the Pacific Theater. The bill now goes to President Trump for his signature. Senator Brian Schatz is a cosponsor of the Senate bill, and 90 members cosponsored the House bill.
