Hirono Welcomes Supreme Court Decision on DACA, Demands Congress Take Immediate Action to Protect Dreamers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii) issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision on the Trump administration’s attempt to dismantle the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:

“Today, I join the hundreds of thousands of Dreamers, including those from Hawaii, in celebrating their hard-won victory at the Supreme Court. I will never forget how these inspiring young people flooded the halls of Congress, refused to be ignored, and galvanized the country behind their inspiring stories. Today’s victory is a testament to their tremendous efforts and commitment.

“While I am grateful these Dreamers will not be subjected to the immediate threat of deportation, we cannot become complacent. Donald Trump has already called the Supreme Court decision ‘horrible,’ and nothing in the decision stops the anti-immigrant Trump administration from trying to end DACA again. We need a permanent, legislative fix to protect these young people from this racist, anti-immigrant administration. The Senate must immediately take up and pass the American Dream and Promise Act.”
