WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) met with Deputy Secretary of Labor Julie Su, President Biden’s nominee to serve as the country’s next Secretary of Labor. After their meeting, Senator Hirono released the following statement:
“Throughout her career, Julie Su has been a champion for working people across our country. From combatting wage theft to strengthening workplace protections, she’s fought to ensure all workers are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. As Deputy Secretary of Labor, she has played a crucial role in the Biden Administration’s efforts to help workers, unions, and businesses recover and rebuild from the pandemic.
“As the daughter of Chinese immigrants, Julie Su is a testament to the American Dream—when confirmed, she will become the first AAPI Cabinet-level Secretary in the Biden Administration, bringing diversity and unique insight to the role. I appreciated the opportunity to meet with Deputy Secretary Su today and discuss her commitment to supporting workers, unions, and businesses fairly and objectively. She is highly qualified to lead the Department of Labor, and I hope the Senate will move swiftly to confirm her nomination without delay.”
If confirmed, Julie Su would be the first Asian-American in the Biden administration to serve in the Cabinet at the secretary level.
