HIRONO JOINS SECRETARY OF DEFENSE IN VISIT WITH MARINES IN KANEOHE

Hirono Discussed Hawaii Base Infrastructure, Military’s Rebalance To Asia-Pacific & Military Sexual Assaults With Secretary

Kaneohe, HI – Senator Mazie K. Hirono joined Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel today during his stop at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe. Before the event, Hirono, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, urged the Secretary to address Hawaii’s base infrastructure issues and discussed the military’s rebalance to the Asia-Pacific region and the Department of Defense’s (DOD) recent measures to address sexual assaults in the military.

“I was glad to join Secretary Hagel in Hawaii today and discuss with him important issues facing Hawaii bases. Hawaii is critical to the military’s rebalance to the Pacific, but many base infrastructure improvements still need to be made. I also commended him on positive steps DOD is taking to curb sexual assaults in the military, an issue that still requires much more work,” Hirono said.
