Washington, D.C. – Senator Mazie K. Hirono commended the Obama Administration’s announced policy change today that undocumented immigrant family members of U.S. service members, reservists and veterans will be allowed to remain in the country and apply for legal residency.
“I applaud the President’s move to allow immigrant families of service members to stay together,” said Hirono. “As a proud member of the Senate Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs committees, I believe that supporting our troops means supporting our military families as well. While this was an important step to help relieve some of the fear and doubt that plague some military families, comprehensive immigration reform is the only solution to ensure that U.S. families are not torn apart by a broken system. I was proud to join my Senate colleagues to pass bipartisan legislation to reform our immigration laws earlier this year, and strongly urge my colleagues in the House of Representatives to do the same.”
