WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii) announced her nomination list of 40 students to four of the U.S. military service academies for the Class of 2023. The academies are now considering the students’ applications for final selections.
There are five military service academies. Senator Hirono is proud to nominate these students to the following four: the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not use the nomination process.
Students seeking admission to a military service academy apply for a nomination from at least one of their U.S. Senators or their member in the U.S House of Representatives, and submit it for consideration along with their academic transcript. Then, each academy’s Director of Admissions selects from the Member’s submitted lists of nominees, though a Congressional nomination does not guarantee any applicant an appointment to the service academy. Students are measured on their scholastic achievement, leadership experience, school involvement, athletic and extra-curricular activities, community contributions, and volunteer or employment experiences.
