Senator Mazie K. Hirono took to the Senate floor to join Senator Christopher Murphy (D-CT) and Senate Democrats in a filibuster to demand that the U.S. Senate vote on commonsense solutions to combat gun violence. In her speech, Senator Hirono paid tribute to former Hawaii resident Kimberly “KJ” Morris, who was one of 49 victims killed in Orlando this past weekend. Senator Murphy began his filibuster at 11:30 a.m. EST, and has maintained it for more than eight hours at the time of publication.
From Senator Hirono’s remarks:
“I agree with my colleague wholeheartedly when he says that it is no longer the time for thoughts, for prayers, for reflection. It’s time for action.
“This year alone, 6,093 people have been killed by guns in our country. This includes 125 people who were killed by guns in the three and a half days since Orlando. If we stood here and provided 6,093 victims a minute of silence, we’d be standing here for four days, five hours, and 33 minutes.”
