"Women's issues are economic issues," Warren said.
(TRNS) -Focusing on how a progressive agenda will benefit across the country, a collection of Senate Democrats spoke out Wednesday on the importance of passing Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s (D-Mass.) Bank on Student Emergency Loan Refinancing Act to curb student debt.
Joined at a press conference by Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.), and Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), Warren promoted her bill to fix what Mikulski called a “double-whammy” facing women who graduate from college: overwhelming student debt and the age-old pay gap between women and men.
“While [women] are being paid in crumbs, they want to make sure that we fight for them so we can change, make sure they get a better slice of the pie. We want equal pay for equal work, and we want student loans that people can afford. We want women to have a fair shot at the American Dream,” Mikulski said.
Warren’s bill tackles student loans through enabling borrowers to refinance their federal student loan debt down to last year’s rates. The bill also aims to close the billionaire loophole, a way for those with higher income to lower their tax rates.
