U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono has been named the new chairwoman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on oversight, federal rights and agency action.
U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, made the announcement on Thursday.
The subcommittee was created last year to provide oversight of agency rulemaking. U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., the current chairman, is taking over the Senate Armed Services' airland subcommittee.
Hirono, a freshman who took office in the Senate last year, will take control of the subcommittee on April 1.
