Oversight, federal rights and agency action

U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono has been named the new chairwoman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on oversight, federal rights and agency action.

U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, made the announcement on Thursday.

The subcommittee was created last year to provide oversight of agency rulemaking. U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., the current chairman, is taking over the Senate Armed Services' airland subcommittee.

Hirono, a freshman who took office in the Senate last year, will take control of the subcommittee on April 1.
