Hurricane Preparedness Tips

Hurricane season runs until the end of November. Make sure that you and your family are prepared for a natural disaster using these tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency:

  1. Know where to go. If you are ordered to evacuate, know the local hurricane evacuation route(s) to take and have a plan for where you can stay. Not every shelter will be open during a disaster. Click here for a list of potential shelters, and listen to the news for updates.
  2. Put together a disaster supply kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, first aid supplies, and copies of your critical information if you need to evacuate. Click here for more guidance.
  3. If you are not in an area that is advised to evacuate and you decide to stay in your home, plan for adequate supplies in case you lose power and water for at least a week and you are not able to leave due to flooding or blocked roads.
  4. Sign up for county-wide alerts:
    1. City & County of Honolulu
    2. County of Maui
    3. County of Hawaii
    4. County of Kauai
