Senator Hirono took to the Senate floor to stand up for reproductive rights on the same day that the Supreme Court heard arguments in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt. The Supreme Court’s decision could impact access to reproductive services for millions of women throughout the United States. Earlier in the day, Senator Hirono addressed a rally at the Supreme Court to call for upholding a woman’s Constitutional right to access abortion services.
From Senator Hirono’s remarks:
“This morning, I joined hundreds of pro-choice advocates on the steps of the Supreme Court in advance of the oral arguments. They came from all parts of the country, with signs such as ‘Don’t mess with access’ and ‘Respect my fundamental human dignity.’
“The lead up to this case was a Texas law, HB2 that imposes unnecessary medical requirements on the state’s clinics that provide abortion services. Laws which are not based on medical science—and opposed by medical practitioners—do not protect women’s health, no matter how loudly and how often the claim is repeated.”
