Hawaii Congresswoman Patsy T. Mink Posthumously Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The late Congresswoman Patsy T. Mink was posthumously awarded one of the nation's highest civilian honors for her work as a relentless fighter for equality and fairness. Senator Hirono worked with the Hawaii State Bar Association in driving letters of support and recommendation to the White House. The Senator attended the ceremony where President Barack Obama honored 18 recipients, including Maui-born Mink. Congresswoman Mink, whom Senator Hirono calls a friend and inspiration, will forever be known as the co-author of Title IX, the landmark legislation that guarantees equal educational opportunities for women in this country.

Following the ceremony, Senator Hirono got a chance to catch up with Wendy Mink, the late Congresswoman’s daughter who accepted the prestigious award on behalf of her mother.
